McKahn Family Cellars – 2020 Napa Carneros Syrah
McKahn Family Cellars
- McKahn Wines is a part of the Mia Carta Napa Wine Collective located in downtown Napa. Private tastings are available by reservation.
- Produce small lots of 12 different Rhone varietals
Winemaker Charles McKahn moved to Napa Valley in 2011 to work under Phillip Titus at Chappellet Vineyard on Pritchard Hill. He spent the next five harvests there working from cellar intern to Enologist and ultimately Assistant Winemaker. In January of 2016 he continued his journey with Bordeaux varieties with William Harrison in Rutherford, crafting small production Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Along the way, in 2014, Charles and his family established McKahn Family Cellars, dedicating itself to crafting site-specific Rhône varietal wines of quality and character from some of the best vineyards in Northern California. They are not beholden to any single appellation, and will search near and far for a vineyard that produces fruit to meet our high standard.
2020 Carneros, Napa Valley Syrah
- 150 Cases produced
- 18 months in 30% new French Oak
Tasting Notes:
The rolling hills of the Carneros American Viticultural Area straddle both sides of the southern Napa and Sonoma counties. These Syrah grapes are farmed on the Napa County side, off Henry Rd. in northern Carneros. The soil is rocky and weathered and the vines have complete exposure to the sun for most of the day. The moderating influence of the San Pablo Bay allows for extended hang time during the growing season.
Ripe plum, blueberry, boysenberry and blackberry preserve start this wine off in an extremely decadent direction. Syrah’s trademark violet and white pepper complement the fruit characters and a subtle hint of black licorice becomes apparent as time passes in the glass. The palate is richly textured with blackberry and black cherry flavors dominating the fruit profile. A creme de cassis and bittersweet chocolate reduction balance the fruit and tannin nicely.
